Press Release re the Restoration of the Interim Federal Healthcare Program

The Canadian Refugee Sponsorship Agreement Holders Association

Media Release, February 19, 2016

The Council of the Canadian Refugee Sponsorship Agreement Holders Association (SAH Council) represents the organizations in Canada that sponsor refugees under the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program.

The SAH Council applauds the announcement on February 18, 2016 of the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, John McCallum, to reinstate full Interim Federal Health coverage for all refugees. It is an encouraging next step that we hope will lead to many
more that are urgently needed to re-build Canada’s ability to provide safe and timely refuge for refugees fleeing war and persecution. It is a step towards fairness, a fundamental principle that the Council calls on the government to uphold in all its refugee programs now and going forward.

Private sponsors, who represent a large and growing number of the Canadian public, are concerned about disproportionate processing times for, limits on sponsorships of, and benefits provided to different refugee populations. We look forward to working with the new government on these  concerns as well. We stand ready, experienced and prepared.
